An aggressive and violent hallucination, the worms or 'headworms' can appear from any place at any time. Their frequent haunts are cracks and crevaces, shadows, and of course Grey's own skin. They usually appear to have mouths, but this is not always the case. They at first seem capable of causing Grey physical harm, though this may too be a hallucination. In actuality, the worms probably act as a catalyst leading Grey to injure himself in a desperate effort to be rid of them.
Their physical sensation on skin has been described as 'creeping and scratching'- not pleasent in any way. Their appearance usually prefaces Grey's entry into a hallucinatory flashback, or the appearance of his Shadows. The flashbacks which the worms bring Grey into do not, ironicly, seem all that negative on the surface, yet are things he has struggled to keep from remembering.
Despite their frequent attacks and sinister nature, the worms have also been seen to behave peacefully and almost like animals or guardians when around Grey. None the less, he does not like them and tends to panic at their appearance. Once the worms converge on him, Grey usually blacks out.
